Texas Hold’em is played with a standard deck of 52 cards. Before the first hand, one player is given the dealer button; this button will move one spot to the left after each hand. The two players to the left of the big blind are required to place bets before the hand begins; these are known as the blinds, and are usually of different sizes (the small blind and the big blind).
As in most forms of poker, the goal in Texas Hold’em is to eventually make the best five-card poker hand. The game begins with each player being dealt two cards. Then, players have a chance to make actions, beginning to the left of the dealer button (on the first round of betting, the blinds do not act first, since they have already been forced to make bets – instead, the player to the left of the big blind goes first). Each player has the choice to raise the current bet, thus increasing the amount players must wager to stay in the hand, call the current bet to stay in the hand but not increase the bet, or fold and forfeit their hand. If no bets have been made yet, the options available are to check (pass) or bet. How much players are allowed to bet will depend on the style of Texas Hold’em you’re playing; in limit hold’em, the bet sizes are fixed, while in no-limit hold’em, you can choose to wager as much money as you like at any time.
A round of betting ends when all players remaining have called the current bet, or if all players choose to check. After the first betting round ends, the dealer will deal out the flop – three community cards all players can count as a part of their hand. After the second betting round ends, a fourth community card (known as the turn) is dealt. After a third round of betting, the last community card – the river – will be dealt. After the river is dealt, there is a fourth and final betting round.
After that final betting round, all players remaining in the hand reveal their hands. Players may use any combination of their two hole cards and the five community cards to make their hand. The player with the strongest poker hand wins the pot (if two or more players tie, they split the pot evenly). There is also another way to win the pot: if only one player remains in the hand, they win the pot by default.
